Castles in the Sand

I have always loved sandbox games. Crysis, SimCity, Supreme Commander [Fn1], Dwarf Fortress, Black and White, Caesar/Pharaoh, and Assassin’s Creed all spring to mind immediately as some of the most enjoyable games I’ve ever played. I did not enjoy Oblivion, Grand Theft Auto, Bully, The Sims, and a few others, but for a host of other reasons that had nothing to do with the sandbox or “free-roaming” element.
